Some of my strongest memories are sensory. I remember the sounds and smells of an event more than I remember all the little details of my sight. I can transport myself to many places in my childhood just by a smell.
In the winter, my mom used to create two scent memories for us: she would put a pot of homemade potpourri on the stove and let it simmer throughout the day and she would help us to make orange and clove pomanders. To this day, I love these smells! They are comforting to me and bring back memories of times spent with my mom.
This past winter I came across a pin on Pinterest for a Christmas Scent from The Mamas Girls. And it included almost exactly what my mom put in her potpourri. But this had a difference: cranberries! I just happened to have all the ingredients on hand and I rushed to the kitchen to create my own. I just loved it! And the cranberries really added something special to it.
So I was wondering around the kitchen one day, thinking about how much I loved the Christmas Scent when I started thinking I would really like something similar that starts moving my nose toward spring.
I had some things on hand and picked up a couple of things at the store and threw together a Citrus-Rosemary Scent that is perking up my senses and getting me geared up for spring.
Ingredients:
- Key Limes
- Lemons
- Rosemary sprigs
- cloves
- a grated whole nutmeg (I grated it to open up the scent)
How-to Make it:
Cut key limes in half, cut lemons into slices, add all other ingredients to a small cooking pot. Cover with water. Place on stove and heat to just under boiling, lower the temperature to the lowest setting to simmer. Keep your eye on it throughout the day and add water as needed.
This scent is so lovely! I hope it is a scent my girls will remember with their kids!

Like you, I remember scents from the past. Your Christmas potpourri is much like ours, and I love it. Now, I can hardly wait to try this recipe. I can already smell each ingredient and together, I’m sure they are wonderful.
One memory Ken and I share is a sandwich we enjoyed in Flower Mound, Texas when we were first married. We still talk about it and feel we are in our 20’s again.
What sweet memories! And a great new scent to try. Can’t wait to have a fresh smell in the house.
