Grandparent’s Day Craft for Preschoolers

Grandparent's Day craft and poem for preschoolers

We have not always been good about getting things in the mail.  And when I say “we,” I mean I have not been good about it.  But we are in the midst of our first preschool unit on mailmen and I took the opportunity to challenge ourselves to get something in the mail in time for Grandparent’s Day.  So I came up with a cute, simple Grandparent’s Day craft for our girls to do. Hopefully they will get to the grandparents some time before the end of the week!

I was doing a little research on crafty things we could make for our 3 sets of grandparents and I came across this cute poem and craft from Joyfully Thriving for Valentine’s Day that I really liked.  I thought it would really work for the grandparents that live in Texas (and for the local ones, too!).

So we got out the washable paint and a leftover yellow poster board and set to work.  G really enjoyed having me paint her hands – it tickles! and then pressing her hands down onto the poster board.  W was a completely different story.  She hated(!) having the paint on her hands and refused to press her hand down on the poster board.  So G’s hand prints will just have to represent both girls.

Once the paint was dry, I cut out the hand prints, punched a hole for the string, and ran them through the laminator.  Then I had G hold out her hands in a big wide hug and measured the length with a string.  She really loved this part.

I thought the poem Joyfully Thriving came up with was really cute, but I knew I needed to change it up a little bit to make it appropriate for Grandparent’s Day.  So, I came up with a quick poem and I thought I would share it with you.

UPDATE:  Based on response to this simple project, I updated and improved it!  I created a template with everything you need to print out and complete this project quickly with your kids. Lucky grandparents. And I love the idea of adapting it for Valentine’s Day, since we’ve just missed grandparents’ day. Pinning! Thanks for linking up to #made4kids
