Toddler Craft: Paper Rainbows (Two Ways)

Paper RainbowsDo you have a playdate coming up with toddlers or preschoolers?  Are you looking for an easy activity or craft to do with them?  I came up with a couple of VERY basic crafts for toddlers/preschoolers to do using stuff you probably have around your house.  And it takes no time at all to multiply it for the group size you have.

Materials:

  • Construction paper in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and white
  • Glue stick (we use washable)
  • Cotton balls
  • Masking tape
  • Stickers in rainbow colors (if desired)

Procedure:

  • Fold construction paper in half lengthwise.  Fold the half into thirds lengthwise. Tear or cut along the folds. Repeat for each piece of colored construction paper.
  • For the white piece of construction paper, only fold it in half lengthwise.
  • Create stacks of paper including one piece of each color per stack.

For Craft One:

  1. Glide a strip of glue over a section of the white construction paper (about 3 inches from the edge, lengthwise).  Place one end of a red square over the glue.  Press down.
  2. Glide a strip of glue over a spot about 1/2 inch away from the edge of the red construction paper. Place one end of an orange square over the glue.  That way you can see the red peeking from behind.
  3. Repeat with each of the other colors (in rainbow order), always leaving a space so each of the colors can peek from behind.
  4. Glide glue over the rest of the white construction paper that is showing and add cotton balls.

For Craft Two:

  1. Lay out colored squares in an overlapping rainbow on top of a length of white construction paper.  Leave about an inch of space from the top (width wise) of the white construction paper.
  2. Cut a long length of tape and lay over the edges of the colored squares to affix them to the white construction paper.
  3. Fold over the excess white construction paper.  This creates a rainbow on either side of the paper.
  4. Have your child pick matching stickers and place them on the appropriate colors.

Please feel free to use any of these ideas and share them with others.  If you do the craft, please let me know.  I would love to get feedback from others who tried them with their toddlers.

    Hi,
Found you at Crafty Mom Share. I am always looking for crafts for kids. I don’t understand where the cotton balls went. Do you have a final picture of what was made?
    Thanks,
    Blessings,

Hi Janis, The cotton balls are kind of hard to see, but they are in the white part of the top picture. You can also see my girl putting them on the white part of the construction paper with glue. Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a comment/question!

I love rainbow crafts! What a colorful activity, and I like how you integrated fine motor skills with the stickers. If your little one is anything like mine, stickers make everything better! Thanks for sharing this at Stress-Free Sunday! Hope your weekend is going well. 🙂
